Final page of the Avatar comic - sorry for those who expected more!

One of the nicest pic in the entire comic, I think - the first panel is *big*, I had some space to work with Katara.

Katara is property of Nickelodeon(?).

For some reason, my favorite panel is the one on the lower left, where the bubble is in the middle of popping - her expression is so dang cute!

As long as you liked it, my work is done.

That *was* a tricky picture to draw, with all those bubbles.

There is one question I've been meaning to ask about this comic, though - is Katara supposed to be talking underwater (like in the last panel) or just thinking?

She's just thinking.

The bubbles framing her words were meant to be a variant of the usage (mostly in Western comics, I believe) of a "thought bubble", but your comment makes it clear my graphic use is not as efficient as I thought.

When she's talking, she has her head in the air bubble. In this case, I use straight lines to the word balloons.

Ah, I was just curious. The way you'd drawn the thought balloons made it look like she might be trying to speak through a mouthful of bubbles (which, in my opinion at least, is more entertaining than just having underwater characters think their dialog), but I wasn't sure since you'd written the dialog as if she were speaking clearly.

In case you want any inspiration for any future comics involving underwater speech, here's the method I use for it: [link]

Ah, yeah, the "garbled words" trick. Probably would not have worked so well with Katara, IMHO.

Just handle it like she's doing a demonstration, repeating the words in her head, but she hopes her moves are clear enough for the viewer to understand on his own. :3

That's cool. I never really bothered with that technique, though - I've always used the "garbled words" method, as you described it. I remember I drew a comic once where the entire second half took place underwater, complete with a lengthy conversation between two characters, and I used that method for the whole duration of the scene (I always wanted to try setting an entire comic underwater from beginning to end and seeing how long I could get away with having nothing but bubbly dialog).

I do personally believe the "bubbly technique" is more appropriate to those "humor-oriented" comics.

The thing is, we're always learning new tricks, trying new stuff. You inspire me, I inspire you, that kind of thing. That's the beauty of that stuff we do.
